In this episode, we'll be covering the interactions between the branches of government, the Constitution, the states, and the people, especially focusing on conflicts and controversy surrounding those interactions.
Session 8: Political Parties and Interest Groups This session explores the similarities and differences between political parties and interest groups. The focus is on the various ways parties and groups influence the policymaking process.
Session 1: The Constitution and Federalism This session reviews the foundations of American democracy, including the events that led to the Declaration of Independence. The controversies and compromises surrounding the writing and ratification of the Constitution will also be covered. The session finishes with the concept of federalism, the division of power between the federal and state governments, and its application to modern policy concerns.
Session 2: The Legislative Branch This session focuses on Congress and its powers. A special focus is on the legislative branch’s position in the separation of powers and checks and balances.
Session 3: The Executive Branch and the Federal Bureaucracy This session focuses on the executive branch especially on the powers of the president and checks on those powers. A special focus is on the role of the executive branch in the constitutional system of government. The federal bureaucracy is also reviewed, focusing on the role of the bureaucracy in implementing policy and the problems with regulation of the bureaucracy.
Session 4: The Judicial Branch This session begins with a review of the powers and roles of the judicial branch in federal policymaking. The history and politics of judicial decision making are also a main focus.
Session 5: Civil Liberties This session investigates the history of civil liberties in the United States. Special attention is on the important Supreme Court cases that outlined modern civil liberties and the process of selective incorporation that applied the Bill of Rights to state governments.
Session 6: Civil Rights This session reviews the question of equality in the United States. The history of civil rights and important legislation is a special focus.
Session 7: Political Ideologies This session looks at the various opinions and beliefs Americans have about the political system and public policy. Public opinion polling and attempts to craft public opinion are also covered.
Session 9: Campaigns and Mass Media This session investigates the influence of campaigns and mass media on public policy. Special attention is paid to the ways that campaigns and media affect public opinion.

Each webinar will be structured to review material on the test, including branches of the government, foundations of the American system, Supreme Court cases, civil rights, and elections.
